No conocemos

2018 is poised to be a year of excitement and growth for a El Club de Latinas de Spokane. The
Club is celebrating ten years of getting together as a group. Started in 2008 by Janeth Angulo, a
native of Colombia and a few of her friends, it began getting together on a monthly basis. The main
goal of the Club at the time was to socialize, share traditional foods, and best of all to share stories
about growing up in our respective countries. Living far away from family and friends can be a very
isolating experience, and for too many of us there was something missing from our lives. For some
what was missing was the sound of our language spoken with a slightly different regional accent, for
others it was just the need to connect.  Regardless of what brought us to the group the need to
connect and to share our cultural heritage was palpable and we set out to create our sisterhood.
Since the very first gathering to today, members of the group strive to continue this tradition while
also participating in other activities as an integral part of a growing Latino community in the Inland
Northwest. The club membership is approximately 100 women from all places of Latin America. At
any given time during our monthly meetings, you will meet 20 or so of our most active members. I
like to call our Club a mini United Nations of Latin-American.  Our members come from diverse
regions of Mexico, Central and South America, Brazil, and the Caribbean. We are not aware of any
other group in Washington States that is more representative of our culture or more diverse.

In 2014, the Club became a registered charitable not-for-profit organization with the State of
Washington. Our goal is to help other immigrant women achieve success and be free from abuse
and exploitation. Although the Club focuses most of our social activism on raising awareness of
Latina women’s issue, we also are involved in other causes such as childhood poverty. We believe
that a strong family is at the center of a healthy and vibrant community.
Also in 2014, the Club began raising funds at the annual Copacabana Gala and the Christmas
Fiesta. In typical Latina fashion, we like to have fun but also be contributing members of the
community we live in. Is what I refer to as conscious socializing.

At the 2017, Fiesta de Navidad, Club members were asked to bring a toy to donate to needy
children in our community. We collected about 76 new toys for boys and girls. We donated the toys
to Child Protective Services for children in the Foster Care system. In previous year toys or money
raised was donated to other nonprofit organizations such as Catholic Charities, Northwest Immigrant
Rights Project, and Sally’s House. As a nonprofit organization, the club relies mainly on the
generosity of our members and our friends. We are grateful to those who have contributed by
purchasing a ticket to our events, and we would also like to acknowledge the generosity of Mayra
and Sergio De Leon, owners of De Leon’s Food, who have contributed to our group since the very
beginning.
We are proud of what we have accomplished so far and look forward to continuing this tradition.
Happy New Year!
